The prosecutor's office will investigate the tourist attraction. Several animals died there

The prosecutor’s office is investigating whether there was any negligence at a popular tourist attraction in Masuria. Eleven animals died there in one day.

The Research Station of the Institute of Parasitology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Kosewo Górne in Masuria is a well-known tourist attraction.

“Gazeta Wyborcza” reminds us that since the 1980s, deer have been bred here in a semi-wild state. Currently, these are red deer, fallow deer, sika deer and two moose. This year, a young moose was also born here. The animals can move freely around the farm, but they can be fed by people.

11 animals died in Kosewo. Investigators will look into the case

Concerns have recently been raised by the fact that since December last year, 19 animals have died on a deer farm at the scientific station in Kosewo. 11 of them died in one day, from May 4 to 5. Since then, there have been no animal deaths at the station. Earlier, concerns about the welfare of the animals were raised by Agnieszka Woźniak-Starak, who drew attention to the condition of an emaciated doe.

Spokesman for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Olsztyn, Daniel Brodowski, told PAP that the prosecutor’s office had taken up the case of the animal deaths. The investigation is ongoing into possible irregularities and negligence at the research station in Kosewo.

Representatives of the Polish Academy of Sciences reported that the deaths of 11 animals have one thing in common: the falls occurred in two herds that had contact with the station’s external fence. There were no animal falls in any of the herds on the internal quarters. They added that for this type of farm, the number of falls can be up to 6 percent of the population, so. “However, the station employees do not suspect the involvement of third parties in only seven of the deaths of animals. The rest could have died directly or indirectly as a result of the actions of outsiders,” they reported.

The Polish Academy of Sciences has announced that it intends to change the profile of the Kosewo station. The deer farm that had been operating for years was not used for scientific purposes, but for the sale of animals and obtaining meat. The President of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Prof. Marek Konarzewski, announced the transformation of the facility into an agroecological station, which will be a “guarantee of protecting the area from wild privatization.”
