The president on a free Christmas Eve. He talks about working “half-assed”
It would be good if Christmas Eve was a day off from work, said President Andrzej Duda on Radio Zet when asked whether he would sign the draft law on this matter.
The Left has submitted a bill to the Sejm assuming that Christmas Eve will be a day off from work. According to the information posted on the Sejm’s website, the draft was sent for the opinion of, among others, Legislative Office.
– We have places, industries, workplaces where it has long been a custom to let employees go earlier and to shorten the working day. Now it would be necessary for the law to finally catch up with this reality and allow people, both women and men, to prepare Christmas Eve dinner, to prepare for the holidays, to visit their families. – said Agnieszka Dziemianowicz-Bąk, Minister of Family, Labor and Social Policy, on Friday on TOK FM radio. – Let’s make this law more realistic, let’s introduce a statutory Christmas Eve free from work – she added.
Will the president sign the law on a free Christmas Eve?
The head of the Ministry of Labor emphasized that whether December 24 will be a day off work this year depends on when and at what pace the bill will be processed by parliamentarians. It seems certain that the president will not stand in the way. When asked on Radio Zet whether he would sign the bill on this matter, Andrzej Duda replied: – I think so. It would be good if Christmas Eve was a day off from work. I agree with the idea of the Left.
The president pointed out that this would be a good solution “especially for women”, who “however, have their role here when it comes to preparing many dishes”, but – as Andrzej Duda emphasized – it would also be easier for men “because you have to do a lot of shopping before On Christmas Eve, prepare the house.
When asked about critical opinions on this matter (expressed, among others, by the head of the parliamentary economy committee, Ryszard Petru from Poland 2050), pointing out that each additional day off from work costs the economy PLN 6 billion, the president admitted that he was not concerned about them because “People also deserve something.”
– Let’s be honest, in most cases it’s a half-assed job. People leave work, they have to take care of things, said the president.
