On Saturday afternoon, very sad news circulated in the media throughout Poland. In the town of Lechów in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, connecting Kielce with Opatów, there was a tragic accident involving a bus.

In this bus there were juniors of MZKS Alit 1980 Ożarów and the coach. Unfortunately, two people died and 17 were injured in the accident. As the journalists of WP SportoweFakty found out, the coach of the young team showed great heroism. According to the report, the driver fainted while driving. At that time, the bus was going straight into a tree, which could have ended tragically.
The president of the club from Ożarów admitted that the trainer, who was the juniors’ guardian, threw himself on the steering wheel to make a turn. – He did it. It’s the coach’s credit, because it would be an incredible misfortune, Witek said. In this accident, Damian Jędrzejewski died, but saved the other passengers.

This feat did not go unnoticed by the president of the Polish Football Association, Cezary Kulesza, who decided to award the hero. “Last Saturday, there was a tragic accident of a bus transporting the junior team of Alitu Ożarów. The bus driver fainted and Alitu’s coach, Damian Jędrzejewski, managed to turn the steering wheel a moment before the accident, reducing the force of the collision and saving his players from almost certain death. Unfortunately, he exposed himself to the greatest injuries and died shortly after being transported to the hospital,” wrote the president of the Polish Football Association on X (formerly Twitter).
“Damian Jędrzejewski will remain forever in our memory as a devoted coach and educator who did not hesitate to risk his own life for the good of his players. The Polish Football Association decided to posthumously award coach Jędrzejewski with the Gold Medal for outstanding achievements in the development of football. Additionally, the coach’s family will receive financial support from the Polish Football Association. I would like to express my condolences to the family and relatives of coach Jędrzejewski. Hail to his memory,” he concluded.
