The Polish champion is dead. Tragic news for Polish sport

This is a huge blow to the world of Polish sports, especially domestic volleyball. Anna Walczak was a very liked and respected figure.

The former volleyball player had been fighting cancer for several years. She was supported both by the club from Kalisz, where she achieved the greatest successes in her career years ago, and by the Polish Volleyball Association.

“Anna Walczak – one of the icons of Kalisz volleyball – has passed away. It is with great sadness that we received the news of the death of Anna Walczak, one of the greatest players in the history of Kalisz volleyball. For years, she represented Augusto Kalisz, with whom she won two gold medals (1997, 1998) and a silver medal at the Polish Championships (1996), and also won the Polish Cup. In 2021, we supported Ania in the fight against cancer. Then the entire volleyball community united to help her in the most difficult match of her life. Despite the great determination and support of many people, today we say goodbye to her with pain and gratitude for everything she did for sport in Kalisz. Her attitude on and off the pitch will remain an example of strength, passion and courage. We express our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones sympathy,” it was written on the Netland MKS Kalisz profile.

Anna Walczak’s son, Krystian, followed in his mother’s footsteps and also plays professional volleyball. In the past he performed, among others, in Częstochowa, Strzelce Opolskie, Siedlce and Bełchatów. Currently, the attacker is a volleyball player playing in the Bulgarian league.

“I will play to make you proud, mother. May God watch over you. Rest in peace. Your smile will remain in my heart forever. I love you,” Krystian Walczak wrote in a moving post on social media.

Anna Walczak died at the age of 54.
