The Polish champion is dead. He brought back two medals from Paris, being a great inspiration

Michał Dąbrowski

Very sad news from the Paralympic community. Michał Dąbrowski, a fencer who was happy with medals in Paris a few months ago, has died…

We mentioned the extraordinary story of Michał Dąbrowski both before his successes at the Paralympic Games in the capital of France and after the results achieved by this unique warrior. The Polish fencer ultimately became the silver and bronze medalist in this year’s competition in Paris. He achieved success in para-fencing, individually in saber (category B, runner-up) and epee (category B, bronze medal).

Michał Dąbrowski is dead. He was an exceptionally inspiring man

In November, the Paralympic medalist was diagnosed with intrahepatic bile duct cancer. In Paris, Dąbrowski fought not only for places on the podium, but also did not hide the fact that he wanted to win the fight for his health.

“Dąbrowski noticed the first signs that something was wrong with his health in October 2023. During the world championships in Terni, Italy, the athlete felt worse. Despite this, he managed to stand on the podium twice. Unfortunately, a month later the diagnosis came,” Norbert Amlicki reported in Wprost.pl at the beginning of September this year.

Both the performance in Paris and the fundraiser were successful for Dąbrowski. In total, over PLN 850,000 was collected through the website pomocam.pl. The Paralympian was an inspiration for many people, demonstrating extraordinary fortitude.

“It worked! Operation Paris was a success and this collection was also a success. Once again, I wholeheartedly thank all those who helped me collect this incredible sum. I believed in your good, I believed in my medals and I believe in medicine. At this point, I am continuing immunotherapy, but no one knows how the treatment will proceed. I will spend the collected amount on all possible treatments to continue pursuing my dreams and passions. Because it’s not over! Los Angeles won’t last long. If you want something, don’t make excuses, just do it! – wrote Dąbrowski at the end of the collection.

Unfortunately, the deadly disease attacked again. Dąbrowski was a player of the Wheelchair Fencing section of Legia Warszawa. He died at the age of only 38.

The day before his death, President Andrzej Duda awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta for outstanding sports achievements, for contributions to the development and dissemination of Paralympic sports.
