The patients still remember them. A health resort near the mountains may return after 20 years
Just over 20 years ago, patients came here for treatments. Slovaks are checking whether it will be possible to restore the status of a health resort to the city at the foot of the mountains.
The Sobrance health resort in eastern Slovakia was bustling with life until 2004 and attracted guests from abroad. Slovaks even compare it to their “Karlovy Vary”. “I was there four or five times, it was very nice,” said a local retiree.
The mineral water resort, known since the 14th century, has a chance to regenerate its potential. Research into the state of its groundwater is ongoing.
They want to restore the status of a health resort
“We measure the efficiency of the source. Currently we know that it is about four liters per second, which is a very large amount of water for medicinal purposes,” hydrogeologist Laco Tometz told tvnoviny.sk. The research will last at least until the end of May and the results will be known then.
According to Slovak law, water must be monitored for at least three years before it can be classified as natural mineral water, and for five years to be considered natural medicinal water.
The mayor of Ján Sklár has high hopes for the results.
“The health resort itself would not only employ people and provide services, but many other areas would certainly be related to its activities – both business and service. Launching the health resort would become an economic driving force not only for the city, but also for the entire region,” he noted. The plans are serious. The regional authorities bought the spa in 2021 from the Trade City company from Trebišov, which was in liquidation. They plan to invest approximately EUR 17 million in its renovation.

You don’t have to come here just for the healing waters. Sobrance has its own Morskie Oko – the lake is located in the protected area of the Eastern Carpathians, at an altitude of 618 meters above sea level. Sninský kameň in the Vihorlat range dominates the water surface. There are several wooden Orthodox churches and small churches in the area. The region is also known for the production of good quality wines (Orechová, Tibava, Choňkovce and others).
