The oldest active railway station in Poland. This is what it will look like after the transformation
The station in Oława is a historic gem on the railway map of the country. The city boasted about the progress of work on its modernization.
Oława in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship is an important point on the railway map of Poland. It was here that a section of the first railway line was opened. The cornerstone for the station building was laid on June 6, 1841, and the facility was put into operation on May 21, 1842. On that day, a special train entered the station. The train included an open wagon with an orchestra.

The 184-year-old station is undergoing a metamorphosis. In August, the city authorities showed several photos showing the progress of work. The façade of the historic building will be renovated.
“Conservation works and the installation of devices and systems are underway at the station. The passenger service area, i.e. the waiting room and toilets, have been moved from the temporary container station to the modernized building, but this is not yet a final solution. It is important because the construction contractor will be able to start dismantling the container facility and carry out landscaping works on the area outside the station,” said Michał Stilger, spokesman for the Polish State Railways in June.
Residents count on elevators
The building will be managed jointly by Polskie Koleje Państwowe SA and the city.
“There is a station part, i.e. related to passenger traffic, and a so-called local government part, which will house the following: firstly, the Museum Chamber, which will remind us of the first railway line in Poland and the oldest station, the second part will be the city guard station and crisis management,” explained Tomasz Frischmann, mayor of Oława.
The website nbi.com.pl informed that part of the existing, historic windows and doors of the station will be renovated. The main body of the building will be intended for the needs of the Oława local government. On the city side, the inscriptions “railway station” and a clock will be placed on the facade. Residents primarily hope that elevators will be installed at the platforms.
