The nightmare of the Polish representative in Germany. The first case in history
What was expected happened. VfL Wolfsburg ended their terrible season in the German Bundesliga with relegation after a defeat in the play-offs against Paderborn.
It is difficult to explain what really happened at the Volkswagen City club. Even in their darkest dreams, Wolves could not have suspected that in the end – on Monday (i.e. May 25) – they would say goodbye to the Bundesliga.
This was decided by a 1-2 loss, after overtime, against second-league Paderborn. VfL lost on their opponent’s turf, playing weak and desperately trying to avoid disaster. This happened, but the players from Wolfsburg only have themselves to blame, because a few days earlier they had not made any progress by playing on their home turf. The goalless draw from the first match had a negative impact and ended Wolves’ dramatically weak campaign.
Kamil Grabara said goodbye to the Bundesliga. A disastrous end to the season
Looking at the statistics, VfL had one of the weakest defenses of any club in the German Bundesliga. In 34 matches, Kamil Grabara, the goalkeeper of the Polish national team, had to remove the ball from the net as many as 69 times. Wolves won seven times, drew eight matches and suffered 19 defeats.
Grabara has been a VfL player since 2024. The Pole moved to Germany as a star of the Danish FC Copenhagen, which regularly plays in the Champions League. However, Grabara wanted to take the next step in his career by choosing a team from one of the five best leagues on the Old Continent. And although it is difficult to criticize the Pole, he was distinguished many times against the background of average teammates – he also had the highest percentage of saved shots in the entire Bundesliga.
However, this is little consolation, since in the end the Grabara had to swallow a really bitter pill. It seems obvious that the Pole will leave the Volkswagen city, as it is difficult to imagine him playing at the level of the 2nd Bundesliga. Especially since VfL has not given the impression of a club with development prospects for a long time. On the contrary, and the final – brutal effect – happened on Monday evening in Paderborn.
For the club from Lower Saxony, this is the first relegation from the Bundesliga in history. VfL has played in the German elite continuously for 29 years. Moreover, in 2009, the German championship was even celebrated in Wolfsburg. Volkswagen is investing approximately EUR 80 million in the sports company. Although the car giant’s finances are spread not only over the men’s team, but also the women’s team, youth groups and infrastructure.
In the years 2015-24, the big star of the VfL women’s team was Ewa Pajor.
