The most popular air route in Europe. Tourists love this island

Palma de Mallorca

Tourists love this hot island. According to the IATA LOT report, it is the most busy connection in all of Europe.

In the latest report of the International Association of Air Carriers (IATA) you can find many interesting curiosities for tourists. From the data from 2024, you can find out, for example, which countries have the largest air markets in the world, or which routes were the most popular among passengers. As many as nine out of the ten most busy air routes in the world are located in the Asia and Pacific region. In the case of Europe, flights from Barcelona to Majorca are the most crowded connection.

Everyone wants to fly to Majorca

Not connecting to Paris or London, and the flight from Barcelona to Majorca turned out to be the most busy air route in Europe. In 2024, as many as 2 million passengers got on the plane on this section. This shows that the problem of excessive tourism on this popular Spanish island is still alive. In 2025, however, there are voices about the resignation of some travelers from this direction due to the clear reluctance of some residents to foreign guests. Time will tell if Majorca will be able to keep its position in next year’s IATA ranking.

Meanwhile, according to CNN, the number one in the world is an hourly national flight in South Korea between the island resort of Dżej (CJU) and the capital, Seul (GMP). “In 2024, over 13 million passengers took advantage of the flight on this route,” we read.

The United States is second to none

The United States took up to 876 million passengers in 2024, which makes them the largest air market in the world. Interestingly, this is four times better than India, which is after all the most populous country in the world and the fifth largest air market. Travelers in the USA mainly use domestic flights, and the most frequently chosen route is the connection between New York (JFK) and Los Angeles (LAX), which chooses 2.2 million passengers. China took second place in this ranking, and the third to Great Britain.
