It has just been built and it already looks like something out of a horror movie. A section of a massive bridge in China was destroyed. It only took a moment for a disaster to occur.
The tragic event occurred on Tuesday, November 11, around 3 p.m. local time. A bridge in China’s Sichuan province was supposed to be an icon of power and make life easier for travelers, but ultimately it became a symbol of shortness of life. The structure in China’s southwestern province opened just a few months ago – in January 2025. Now unusable.
Bridge disaster in Sichuan
The bridge in question is called Hongqi, it was 758 meters long and its pillars were 172 meters high. The structure is located near the Shuangjiangkou Hydroelectric Power Plant. Already a day before the collapse, disturbing signals appeared – cracks were noticed on the road surface and the bridge slope. The authorities immediately introduced temporary traffic restrictions there, and it turned out that they were right.
The bridge was part of the key G317 route and connected the heart of the country with Tibet. It was intended to make it easier for locals and tourists, among others: access to the Tibetan Plateau and looked majestic. It was landslides on the slope of the bridge that led to the final collapse of part of the structure. According to preliminary analyses, the cause was the geological instability of the area. A large part of the bridge collapsed into the Dadu River. No fatalities were reported.

Footage from the moment of the disaster quickly circulated on Chinese social media and also became popular in Europe. They show the terrifying moment of the disaster. The recordings were full of comments from shocked Internet users. Many of them couldn’t believe how such a massive bridge could collapse so quickly. “Was it due to sloppy construction?” – they asked. What added to the anxiety was the fact that the attraction was really new, maybe not as fresh as the road Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge opened on September 28, 2025, but still very modern. An official investigation was launched into the disaster.
