The Mediterranean island is a hit. Impressive increase in the number of tourists from Poland
Malta has been breaking records of interest among European tourists for several years. New data show that Poles have a large share in this.
Maltese tourism is developing at an impressive pace. Among European incoming markets, Poland stands out in particular – during nine months of this year, 280,000 people visited Malta. tourists from our country, which means an increase of 50%. compared to the same period in 2024.
More tourists from Poland than from France and Germany
Poland found itself at that time 3rd place in terms of the number of foreign guests, second only to Great Britain (639 thousand) and Italy (471.8 thousand), and ahead of France (234.5 thousand) and Germany (193 thousand). Polish tourists did not stop at free attractions – average expenditure per capita in the analyzed period amounted to EUR 778. This is more than tourists from Italy (on average 664 euros), but less than visitors from Spain (803 euros). Total Polish tourists spent during this time 218.32 million euros.
The interest in the Mediterranean island is confirmed by data from local airports. By the end of September this year, Katowice Airport welcomed as many tourists to Malta as throughout 2024 (102,000). The rapid development of incoming tourism from Poland is also due to the launch of direct, year-round connections of PLL LOT with this Mediterranean country (four flights a week).
“If the dynamics remains at the same level as so far, almost 4 million foreign guests are likely to visit Malta by the end of this year, including 350,000 guests from Poland,” predicts John Mary Attard, regional director of the Malta Tourism Authority office in Warsaw.
Development of tourism in Malta. Vision for 2050
Between January and September 2025, Malta welcomed over 3.075 million tourists, an increase of 11.7%. compared to the same period a year earlier. Total tourist spending was estimated at EUR 3.3 billion (an increase of over 18%), which confirms the continuing trend of growing interest in this Mediterranean destination. The island’s strategy is to attract tourists all year round.
The government of Malta has set a target for 2050 – an increase in the number of tourists to 4.5 million annually, which is to come mainly from areas outside Europe.
Planes with fans. Poland-Malta match
Concerts and sporting events, such as the Poland-Malta World Cup qualifying match on November 17, may also be an incentive to travel. Data from the eSky.pl office show that in the coming weekend over 20 percent all bookings made by this travel agency are trips to this island. “We record nearly three times more bookings than on the same days in 2024. This shows that fans are increasingly combining their passion for sport with traveling and discovering new places. Interestingly, for the whole of November, we are observing an almost 50% increase in travel to Malta y/y,” noted Marcin Starkowski, an expert at the eSky.pl online agency.
