The latest data confirms the scientists’ concerns. The number of rats in cities will grow

For scientists for a long time it was clear that global warming would mean an increase in the number of rats in the largest cities. The latest data from 16 such centers confirm their thesis.

On January 31, the latest data on the reproduction of rats in big cities was published. The scientific journal “Science Advans” presents statistics from 16 cities: 13 in the United States, Toronto, Tokyo and Amsterdam.

Even more rats in big cities

Researchers from the University of Richmond in Virginia under the leadership of dr. Jonathan Richardson stated that in as many as 11 out of 16 cities surveyed the number of rodents increased significantly. The worst was in Washington, San Francisco, Toronto, New York and Amsterdam. Declines were recorded in Tokyo and New Orleans.

Long -term trends not only point to the increase in the rat population in cities that record a rapid increase in residents and urban quickly. Over the past decade, the number of reported complaints has also increased significantly.

Scientists said that the temperature was the factor most related to the number of rodents. Where they increased the most, the most rats also appeared. This is translated by the extension of the period of activity of these animals. Milder winters also mean less mortality and longer and more intensive reproduction.

Light winters are conducive to rapid growth of rats

“From the point of view of rats physiology, an increase in temperatures is the key to better adaptation to colder months, which until now limited the reproduction and feeding activity” – explain the authors of the study.

For example, in New York, more rats were always noticed in the summer and smaller winter. However, when the winter months cease to be troublesome, more rats are experiencing difficult months and spring is much stronger.

An example of Tokyo, where much greater attachment to purity is noticeable than in American cities, of course shows that not only the temperature affects the number of rats. Social involvement and the actions of the local administration are also important.
