The largest oil deposit in Poland. The expert cools emotions
The largest oil deposit in the history of Poland discovered off the coast of the Baltic. This is a historic moment, although Poland will not stay the second Kuwait.
According to Central European Petroleum (CEP) yesterday, the largest conventional oil deposit in Poland was discovered. Wolin East, located 6 km from Świnoujście, may contain 22 million tons of oil and 5 billion m³ of natural gas. This is one of the greatest discoveries of this type in Europe in recent years and a potential breakthrough for domestic energy security.
Baltic oil and gas deposits – a breakthrough for the energy
The We1 well is made of a jack-up platform, on water with a depth of 9.5 m. It reaches 2715 MW deep. The tests showed a 62-meter oil column and very good complex properties in the main dolomite layer. The Wolin license covers an area of 593 km² and was awarded by the Minister of the Climate and the Environment.
CEP estimates that the entire Wolin license may hide up to 33 million tons of oil and condensate and 27 billion m³ of gas. The company is conducting talks with technological partners and investors.
– This is a historic moment for the Polish energy sector – emphasizes Rolf G. Skaar, president of CEP.
Expert: “We will not be the second Kuwait”
Meanwhile, in the opinion of an energy and energy transformation expert, the discovery of deposits – although significant – will not make Poland a oil giant.
– The fact that the largest oil and gas deposits in post -war Poland have not yet been discovered does not prejudge their actual impact on the Polish economy. And this, unfortunately, will be limited: for several years oil extraction could increase from the current level of approx. 4 percent. up to 8 percent national demand. Also, natural gas resources are not groundbreaking. Of course, this is important information from the point of view of Poland’s energy security – which will undoubtedly strengthen, which should be assessed positively. Nevertheless, we will not stay the second Kuwait or Qatar – comments Maciej Stańczuk, BCC expert for energy and energy transformation.
