The island, loved by Poles, has its own tricity. You can relax here from the crowds
Not as famous as the capital of Malta, Valetta, but also picturesque and interesting. The Maltese Tri-City is rich in monuments and is picturesquely situated on three promontories. You can relax here from the crowds.
Malta is an increasingly popular destination among tourists from Poland. Although sunny countries in southern Europe attract mainly sandy and rocky beaches and relaxation in positive temperatures, the island also has a lot to offer for tourists who like long sightseeing. Well-preserved historical buildings (although bombings from World War II left their mark), bright sandstone buildings and inviting streets for walks have been attracting not only guests tired of the hustle and bustle of the big city, but also filmmakers.
It may be an interesting route to discovering Malta the local Tricity – Birgu, Bormla and Isla. They are connected by a defensive line built in the 17th and 18th centuries and a picturesque location on three neighboring headlands on the Mediterranean Sea. Together with the town of Kalkara, they form the Kottonera area. It is well connected to Valetta and less crowded and exposed to tourists.
Birgu, Bormla, Isla. What awaits tourists there?
In the local tricity, the most important medieval town was Birgu, occupying a headland with the great fort of Saint Angelo. Nowadays, in Birgu you can take a walk along the waterfront where luxury yachts are moored and walk along the promenade to the recently renovated dock no. 1 in Bormla. While walking, we will notice, among others: restored palaces and modern art installations.
Isla (L-Isla in Maltese) is a town located opposite Fort Saint Angelo. The local attraction is the Gardjola Gardens, where you can take a break from the crowds and admire the views of the coast. The gardens can be seen in the main photo of the text, in the lower right corner. Deeper on land we will notice a red dome – this is the church of St. Paul in Bormla.
Guided walks around these three cities are available from travel agencies or on the popular Get Your Guide website. You can create your own tour plan by visiting talesofkottonera.com. It takes the form of an interactive map, thanks to which we can see the most important monuments from a bird’s eye view. Guests are also guided around the Kottonera area by animated guides, such as Bertu, who “comes from a family of sea people” and is a regular visitor to the coast. The content is available to children, tourists and enthusiasts of Maltese history (in English).
Can’t you walk for a long time? In the local Tricity, a good option for people with limited mobility may be self-propelled electric cars equipped with programmed GPS. He shows tourists where to go and tells them about the places they pass.
According to the latest data, Poles’ interest in Malta is growing. From January to October 2024, this sunny island has already been visited by 209,000 people. Polish tourists. Last year it was 167 thousand. Maybe this time they will expand their trip to include the Tri-City?
