The iconic Baltic Sea attraction sank. Tourists loved it
An unpleasant fate befell a seaside attraction visited by crowds. This season, the ship-restaurant will be out of reach for tourists
The unexpected incident occurred on April 7 in the morning in the German resort of Lubmin on the Baltic Sea. The popular restaurant ship “MS Vaterland” was almost completely submerged. According to the water police, the bow and middle part of the vessel are submerged. At this point, only the superstructure sticks out of the sea. Local media write about the loss.
The restaurant ship sank
The attraction of “MS Vaterland” is a real hit for tourists visiting Lubmin. Every year, tourists came to the town in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to enjoy beautiful beaches, walk on the pier or use bicycle paths. A must-see during such a trip has always been a visit to the ship’s restaurant.
The facility standing at sea has existed since 1942 and was, among others, a meeting place for water sports enthusiasts and beach goers since 2006. It could accommodate up to 35 guests at the same time. There is little hope that it will be available again as all attempts to pump out the water and prevent the ship from sinking have failed.
Perry Schongalla from the rescue company Moses Maritime Services, who was on site immediately when the problem was noticed, revealed that the team tried to prevent the disaster using a powerful water pump and then notified THW (Federal Agency for Technical Relief) and the fire brigade.
Lubmin attraction under water. The police are investigating the case
At this point, the cause of the sinking of the MS Vaterland remains unclear. The water police are conducting an investigation to clarify all circumstances. Divers are involved in the operation – only after their intervention will it be possible to better understand the accident.
It is certain that this holiday season, tourists will have to come to terms with the lack of the iconic attraction. Will there be another one? It is unknown. The historic MS Vaterland is certainly not a ship that can be easily replaced. Its unique atmosphere will forever remain in the memory of those who regularly spent their free time there.
