The grave of a medieval knight discovered in Gdańsk. Formerly a well -known ice cream parlor stood there
Not only Polish but also world media reports an extraordinary archaeological discovery in Gdańsk. A complete skeleton was found in the tomb with the image of the knight on the plate.
Archaeologists have been conducting work in this area since 2023. They came across a tombstone with the image of a knight in a rectangle surrounded by Grodzka, Sukiennicza and Popowa streets. Experts from the Archaeological and Conservation Laboratory of Archeoścan were called to thoroughly examine the residues of the casket.
“This fragment of Gdańsk becomes even more famous, and we congratulate Sylwia Kurzyńska and Monika Kasprzak and the entire archeoścan team,” he commented in social media shortly after discovery Pomeranian Voivodship Conservator of Monuments. He was not wrong, he has already informed about the find, among others American CNN or Fox News.
Gdańsk. The knight’s grave contained a full skeleton
As it turned out, a complete skeleton was found under the tombstone, which belonged to a man of about 180 cm tall. It was heavily built and died at the age of about 40 years. He lived over 700 years ago, and his tombstone was made of Gotland limestone. Archaeologists immediately knew that it was not a “ordinary inhabitant of Gdańsk”, but rather someone’s wealthy, most likely from the knight’s state.
The cracked tombstone went to the Archaeological Museum in Gdańsk, where a thorough inventory will be subject to 3D software. After scientific studies, experts will probably also try to reconstruct.
Archaeologist about discovery in Gdańsk: one of the most important
It is worth mentioning that earlier, remains of wooden buildings from the 12th-12th century were found under the former building of the Ice Bear. However, Sylwia Kurzyńska from Archeoscan emphasized that it was the knight’s grave that was “one of the most important archaeological discoveries in Poland of recent years.”
According to the archaeologist and head of Archeoścan, the tomb is extremely well preserved. She emphasized that although no treasures were found at the deceased, he had to be a high -ranking person: a knight or even a commander, surrounded by respect.
