The funeral will be less burdened with loved ones. The Sejm approved a higher allowance

Posiedzenie Sejmu (7 maja)

The Sejm approved a funeral allowance. The benefit will increase from 4,000 up to 7,000 zloty. The changes will come into force from the beginning of 2026.

The Sejm adopted an amendment to the act assuming an increase in the funeral allowance from the current 4,000 PLN up to 7 thousand zloty. 410 deputies voted in favor of the project, only one person was against, and six abstained. The changes include not only the amount of the benefit, but also new valorisation principles and the possibility of receiving the so -called targeted allowance.

Funeral allowance up

Increasing the funeral allowance will apply from January 1, 2026. Deputy Minister of Family, Labor and Social Policy Sebastian Gajewski announced that the total cost of this change in the first year will be PLN 1.2 billion. The project will now go to the Senate.

According to the adopted amendment, the funeral allowance will be covered by the valorisation mechanism for the first time. From March 1 each year, the amount of the benefit will be subject to an increase if inflation exceeds 5 percent last year. The purpose of introducing this solution is to reduce the increase in funeral services prices, which have not yet been compensated by any form of benefit increases.

New rules

The amendment also regulates the issues of the so -called targeted allowance. This benefit is to be granted to a person who incurred the costs of the funeral, but has no right to funeral grant, e.g. due to the lack of family connections with the deceased. The targeted allowance will also be entitled when a person entitled to a basic benefit covers additional, exceptional costs – for example, related to bringing corpses from abroad. This is to provide support in unforeseen situations that cannot be covered from regular benefit.

The funeral allowance has been unchanged for years. The adopted changes are aimed at adapting the benefit to the economic realities and the needs of citizens.
