Alex Manninger died in a tragic accident. The former goalkeeper of clubs such as Arsenal and Juventus was only 48 years old.

Former Austrian national football team player Alex Manninger died in an accident at a railway crossing. His car was hit by a speeding train. The incident took place in Salzburg around 8:20 a.m.

The Salzburg police reported that the emergency medical team tried to save the athlete using a defibrillator. The man was supposed to be alone in the car and was pulled out by the services. However, resuscitation did not bring any positive results, the 48-year-old did not survive the force of the impact.

During his career, 48-year-old Manninger made 64 appearances for Arsenal (between 1997 and 2002), winning the Premier League championship and the FA Cup with the London club. He made 33 appearances for Austria, being part of the squad for Euro 2008, which was played in his home country.

The player started his sports career in his hometown, playing for Red Bull Salzburg. He joined as many as 14 different clubs across Europe, eventually joining Liverpool as a 39-year-old. However, during his short stay in this team, he did not play a single match. He played for teams such as Juventus, Udinese, Siena and Augsburg.

Manninger named “ambassador of Austrian football”

At Arsenal, Manninger was a replacement for the legendary David Seaman, but he helped his team beat West Ham on penalties in the sixth round of the FA Cup and impressed in a memorable clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford. In March 1998, he was even named Premier League player of the month.
