The fisherman from Krakow was desperate. He did not give up and his determination was rewarded

A fishing enthusiast from Krakow went fishing to a gravel pit in the Nowa Huta district. He did not expect that his day would end with a difficult fight with a huge specimen of Ctenopharyngodon idella.

A resident of Małopolska – Daniel Enz – told about his struggles at the fishing spot Przylasek Rusiecki in an e-mail to the editors of the website poznasciwedkarskie.com.pl, which was published on November 28. He started his fishing career 15 years ago.

Although he has seen a lot, his summer visit to a forest gravel pit gave him a lot of impressions. He will remember his struggles with the cyprinid for a long time.

He thought he had no chance against this fish. Yet he won a spectacular victory

The Krakow resident went to the reservoir on August 22. That day he was targeting crucian carp (Carassius carassius), bream (Abramis brata), tench (Tinca tinca) and small carps (Cyprinus carpio). He fished using the method feeder technique, which comes from England. It involves using a special bait basket, which is filled with aromatic food and placed right next to a short leader with bait. The enthusiast describes that that day he chose wafters (a neutral buoyancy bait) with the flavor of orange chocolate.

The taking started soon after. As a reader of Wiadomości Wędkarskie describes, “it was very delicate”, and after setting the hook, he realized that it was not one of the fish he was expecting. The specimen “started to pull the line out of the reel with enormous force – in a blink of an eye, one third of the spool’s reserve was gone,” we read. But then the cyprinid stuck to the bottom in the middle of the tank, and the angler realized that his equipment was too weak to dominate the fish.

“After 30 minutes of hauling, during which I failed to get it off the bottom, the specimen parked itself in some snag, it was probably a submerged tree. Euphoria turned into despair,” admits the enthusiast. He thought it was over and the cyprinid would just swim away because he was fishing with barbless hooks, but it turned out differently. All thanks to the great determination of the resident of Małopolska.

“I have a gold medal!”

“I tightened the line and waited for the fish’s reaction,” he describes. After a short time – although it is worth emphasizing that the next minutes lasted forever – the fish “came out of the hook”. “It was just amazing! When, after an hour of towing, I saw a huge grass carp under the water surface, my legs went weak under me. After a few tries, I luckily managed to get it into the landing net. Phew, I’ve got it… I’ve never experienced such emotions before,” assures the Krakow resident.

How big was this specimen? “The measuring tape showed 110 centimeters and the weight was 18.20 kilograms,” the angler describes.

“I have a gold medal!” – he concluded.

Virginia. A state record was broken for rainbow trout

In the context of this extraordinary feat, it is worth telling about another one recently achieved by an American angler. An enthusiast broke the Virginia state record for rainbow trout.

The specimen weighed 8.4 kg and measured 84 cm. The local Department of Natural Resources issued a congratulatory message last week.
