Natural Christmas trees are becoming more and more popular among Poles. Foresters from the State Forests remind us that purchasing such a tree is an ecological choice. You cannot cut down the forest on your own.

As they grow, spruces, firs and pines absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. After the holidays, they decompose and do not pose a burden to the environment.

– Although an artificial Christmas tree is perennial, it contributes to greenhouse gas emissions during production and takes hundreds of years to decompose. Therefore, when choosing a natural tree, we act in harmony with nature – explained Michał Dziedzic from the Siedlce Forest District in an interview with Polish Radio RDC.

Christmas tree from the State Forests. What’s the price?

A spruce 1.6–2.5 m high can be purchased for PLN 49 gross in the Siedlce Forest District. In other regions, tree prices range from PLN 40 to PLN 130, depending on the height and species. For example:

  • In RDSF Warsaw: a 2-3 m spruce costs PLN 40-50.

  • In RDLP Gdańsk: spruce costs on average PLN 40, fir – PLN 80.

  • In RDSF Katowice: spruce – PLN 53, fir – PLN 65.

Foresters ensure that their Christmas trees are price competitive compared to trees from private plantations and supermarkets, especially in large cities.

Spruce or fir?

When choosing a Christmas tree, it is worth paying attention to its appearance and functional features.

  • Spruce – stiffer, shorter needles that prick strongly. More branchy, perfect for heavier decorations.

  • Fir – finer branches and finer needles, less branched. Recommended for minimalist decorations.

Where to buy a Christmas tree from foresters?

Trees can be purchased directly in forest districts, plantations or at designated sales points. Some forest districts also organize the “Christmas Tree Harvesting” campaign, where you can cut down your own tree. Information about sales hours and locations is available on the websites and social media of the State Forests.

When buying a Christmas tree at the market, it is worth making sure that it comes from a legal source. The seller should have a purchase invoice or an assignment from the State Forests. There are penalties for illegally cutting down trees – a fine of up to PLN 500 or even PLN 5,000.

How to take care of a Christmas tree so that it lasts for a long time?

For a natural Christmas tree to be a decoration throughout the holidays, it must be properly cared for.

  • Hardening: : Before bringing it home, leave the Christmas tree on the balcony or in a cool garage for 1-2 days.

  • Avoid heat: : Do not place the tree close to radiators – dry air harms the needles.

  • Watering: : Use a stand with space for water and refill it regularly, because the Christmas tree absorbs a lot of moisture.
