A Jeju Air plane crashed. The problems occurred a day after the deadliest plane crash in South Korea’s history.

A day after a Jeju Air plane crashed in South Korea, killing 179 people, another crash occurred. On Monday morning, the same carrier’s Jeju-bound flight (flight 7C101) took off from Gimpo Airport in Seoul, but a malfunction occurred shortly thereafter.

A Jeju Airlines plane crashed

The South Korean Yonhap agency reports that the plane returned to Gimpo airport and landed safely there. It is unclear what caused the problems. This happened a day after a plane from the same airline (also a Boeing 737-8AS) crashed while landing on Sunday.

On Sunday, the deadliest plane crash in South Korean history occurred at Muan Airport in South Korea. A Jeju Air passenger plane (7C2216), flying from Bangkok, veered off the runway while landing at Muan Airport and crashed into the airport wall. The disaster occurred shortly after 9 local time – at 1 a.m. Polish time. 179 people died, only two crew members survived.

The video from the scene shows that the machine landed on its belly, then hit the fence and burst into flames.

The cause of the plane crash in South Korea is being investigated

The cause of the tragic accident is being investigated. One of the theories considered was damage to the aircraft’s landing gear due to a bird collision.

Some experts question such a scenario. Christian Beckert, a flight safety expert and Lufthansa pilot, told Reuters that, apart from the reversing lights, most of the plane’s braking systems were not activated, causing a “big problem” and a quick landing.

According to Beckert, it was unlikely that the bird’s impact damaged the landing gear while it was still up. If the machine collided with the bird after it had been lowered, it would be difficult to pick it up again.

Reuters reports that the plane crash is the deadliest on South Korean soil and the worst involving a South Korean airline since the Korean Air disaster in 1997. Then, a Boeing 747 crashed on the island of Guam. 228 people died and 26 survived.
