The end of Iga Świątek’s season? No one had thought about this plan before
Iga Świątek is entering the final stretch of the 2026 season. However, it may turn out that the Polish tennis player’s plans will be completely different than in previous years.
Iga Świątek reached the fourth round of the US Open Grand Slam. The Pole did not manage to improve her best result this season when it comes to participation in Grand Slam tournaments.
The best performance was at the Australian Open, where the tennis player reached the quarterfinals. However, in Melbourne, Świątek met Jelena Rybakina, who beat the Polish player and then won the title of the best singles player of AO 2026.
What’s next for Iga Świątek? The end of the season may be surprising
The best Polish tennis player will drop to ninth place in the WTA ranking after the tournament in New York. The Pole, however, will be one point lower in the WTA Race rankings. This is important because it complicates the situation regarding Świątek’s performance in the WTA Finals tournament that ends each season.
In recent years, the Pole has regularly participated in this prestigious competition. This season, however, was difficult for Świątek, and there are many indications that even a brilliant finish may not result in a place in the top eight of the WTA Race.
The next tournament in which the Polish tennis player is to take part will be in Beijing (WTA 1000). In the context of securing a place in the WTA Finals, Świątek will not only have to accumulate her own points, but also look at what her direct rivals will achieve. In eighth place this season is the Czech Linda Noskova, the winner of Wimbledon. Ukrainian Marta Kostiuk is in ninth place.
In fact, the threshold for qualifying for the WTA Finals should be sought in position number 7, occupied by Karolina Muchova. The Polish woman’s loss to the Czech woman is currently as much as 816 points. Świątek would have to win at least two tournaments in Asia to think about going to Indian Wells with seven other best players of the season.
If the former WTA ranking leader actually takes up this challenge, it is possible that in addition to the tournaments in Beijing and Wuhan (WTA 1000), Świątek will also play in some WTA 500 tournaments. Although this would be a crazy scenario, considering the intensity of the games and the tight calendar before the WTA Finals. This tournament is scheduled for November 7-14.
Iga Świątek and all her championship titles
In her career so far, the Pole has won a total of 26 championship titles on courts almost all over the world.
Świątek won six Grand Slam titles, four times at Roland Garros (2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024), once at the US Open (2022) and Wimbledon (2025). To this should be added the prestigious triumph in the WTA Finals (2023).
In addition, wins in WTA 1000 tournaments, respectively, in: Rome (2021, 2022, 2024), Doha (2022 and 2024), Indian Wells (2022 and 2024), Miami (2022), Beijing (2023), Madrid (2024), Cincinnati (2025) and the latest – in Toronto (2026).
The list also includes WTA 500 competitions: Adelaide (2021), Stuttgart (2022 and 2023), San Diego (2022), Doha (2023) and Seoul (2025).
Plus a Polish tournament accent, WTA 250 in Warsaw (2023).
As for Polish topics, it is impossible not to emphasize the bronze medal of the Olympic Games in the singles competition in Paris (2024). Świątek also won the Polish national team in the United Cup in Sydney (2026).
