The Danube flooded Budapest, tourists were excited. “They are practicing a dangerous sport”
Water levels are rising in the capital of Hungary. Despite the growing threat and numerous appeals from the police, tourists are approaching the river at a dangerous distance.
Budapest, one of the most popular European capitals among tourists, is also struggling with the floods that hit the Central and Eastern European region in September. The peak of the flood wave is currently sweeping through the city. The Danube has already left the river bed, flooding the recreational areas on the waterfront. Despite warnings about the danger, tourists visit endangered areas in droves and take photographs of the unusual phenomenon with curiosity. The police once again appealed to residents and travelers.
Flood in the capital of Hungary
The situation in Budapest is getting worse by the hour. Due to the growing threat, it was decided to close Margaret Island on Tuesday, and the next day the animals were evacuated from the zoo there. The city also excluded some trams and buses traveling along the Danube. The flood wave, which is expected to peak on Saturday, has now reached the outskirts of the capital. The river level in the city center was too high and the Danube spilled into the surrounding recreational areas.
Tourists ignore prohibitions
While emergency services and residents are trying to protect the parliament building, one of the symbols of Budapest, from flooding, tourists are watching the unusual phenomenon with curiosity and excitement, taking photos and videos in the flooded areas. “Tourists unaware of the disaster are practicing dangerous sports in Budapest while the water level in the Danube is rising. The police warn people to be more careful and not to approach the water,” we read on the Hungarian Metropol website. On both the Buda and Pest sides (where the Parliament is located), some roads completely disappeared under water. “It is forbidden to approach the Danube, both by car and on foot! The flowing river is dangerous, it can easily kidnap anyone,” reads the city police’s announcement.
