A dramatic rescue operation on a popular beach on the Baltic Sea ended with the death of a 53-year-old man. Rescuers also pulled a 46-year-old woman from the sea and was taken to hospital. At the time of the incident, a red flag was flying on the beach in Darłówko. According to Głos Koszaliński, the tragedy occurred on Sunday, August 17, in the area of ​​exit no. 8, in the eastern part of the popular resort.

A tragic day on the Baltic Sea

On Sunday evening, swimming conditions in Darłówko were so dangerous that rescuers raised a red flag. Despite the ban on entering the water, a 46-year-old woman and a 53-year-old man found themselves in the sea and at some point began to drown. SAR units (9R-17 and R-26) were immediately dispatched to the site. According to TVP 3, another woman was injured and received help at the scene. “The second one was taken by helicopter to the hospital in Koszalin,” we read. Unfortunately, despite resuscitation efforts, the man pulled to the shore could not be saved. “The man’s resuscitation was started by SAR rescuers and then taken over by the air ambulance crew. Despite the actions taken, the doctor confirmed the death of the injured person,” Przemysław Soiński, spokesman for the Maritime Search and Rescue Service, told TVP 3.

A red flag means a complete ban on swimming

The man’s death was confirmed at 8:04 p.m. on Sunday, August 17. The police are now determining the exact course of the incident and the circumstances in which the injured ended up in the sea.

The reasons for raising a red flag may vary: from strong winds and high waves, through dangerous reverse currents, to deteriorating water quality, for example when cyanobacteria bloom. A red flag always means a complete ban on swimming. Entering the sea is only safe when a white flag flies on the beach. The lack of any means that the rescuers are not on duty at that hour.
