The Confederation uses AI in the political fight. “Enormous Danger”

Cyfrowi Mateusz Morawiecki i Przemysław Czarnek w spocie Mentzena

This year, Konfederacja published several spots in which it used the power of artificial intelligence. “Wyborcza” drew attention to the dangers associated with this.

Many voters may have come across Confederation’s materials online, in which the party used AI capabilities. He gained considerable popularity, among others: spot depicting PiS as a sinking ship.

The Confederation is supported by AI. The political scientist sees a threat

In the above-mentioned material, we saw a rusty ship with the PiS logo, and Mateusz Morawiecki and Przemysław Czarnek argued about the role of the helmsman. Jarosław Kaczyński was shown isolated in his cabin. Further on, we saw an outflow of passengers – presumably voters – who were switching to Mentzen’s modern yacht. At the end, the PiS ship simply went down.

The leader of the Confederation summed up the whole thing in short words. “Values don’t sink. It’s time to move on!” – wrote Sławomir Mentzen, emphasizing the stability of his views and the political chaos and changes in the PiS course. In his spot, he also referred to polls that show an outflow of voters from PiS to the Confederation and the Confederation of the Crown of Poland.

At the end of April, Mentzen’s party also attacked the Minister of Climate and Environment, Paulina Henning-Kloska, with an AI spot. In May, material was published that criticized PiS in connection with the party’s proposal for a ban on cryptocurrency trading. “Gazeta Wyborcza” pointed out that Konfederacja is the first Polish party that started using AI on such a large scale in the fight for political spots.

– I’m not surprised she’s the first to do it. It may be funny and modern, perhaps it will appeal to the Confederation’s electorate, because they are the ones who mainly use social networking sites, but it is a huge danger – said Prof. in an interview with the newspaper. Szymon Ossowski, political scientist from the University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań.

The Confederation is not afraid of AI. KO MP: Mentzen should be criticized

Using artificial intelligence in this way tends to spread disinformation. Such materials from the Confederation should be marked as generated by AI, because they may mislead the recipient, he added. As he said, in similar productions it is easy to put arbitrary words into politicians’ mouths. He admitted that the party at least includes its logo in its materials, although the risk of misleading is still high.

Patryk Jaskulski, an MP from the Civic Coalition, admitted in an interview with “GW” that a message created using AI can be effective. – Some recipients may be confused and assume that the material contains real people. Therefore, Mentzen should be criticized for not clearly marking all the material, he said. At the same time, he had no doubt that the trend would intensify.

– It must be made clear that AI should not be used without any restrictions. This issue requires regulation, and disinformation and manipulative content should be effectively removed from online platforms. Unfortunately, the president vetoed the bill implementing DSA, which may make the fight against such materials more difficult, he noted.
