The Central Statistical Office (GUS) conducts the Household Budget Survey. Its purpose is to check, among others: how Poles’ income and expenses are changing. The information collected is used to compile official statistics.

– The household budget survey is the basic source of information on the level and structure of expenses and income of the surveyed households, consumption of basic food products, housing conditions and subjective assessment of the financial situation. Data obtained from the household budget survey make it possible to analyze the living conditions of the population and assess the impact of various factors on the level and diversity of the financial situation of basic groups of households. Additionally, the survey of household budgets provides the necessary data used to: create weights for calculating price indexes of consumer goods and services, determine the cost of living index for households, determine the level of minimum remuneration for work, establish rates for municipal waste collected and collected selectively by municipalities, as well as calculate economic poverty rates, develop simulation models regarding the tax burden on households and social benefits – informs the Central Statistical Office.

According to Interia.pl, households selected by lot take part in the survey. A Central Statistical Office surveyor will visit the indicated address and provide information about the purpose and course of the survey. Participation in the project is voluntary, which means that you can refuse to participate in the study. It is worth emphasizing that the survey takes place all year round, so the interviewers’ visits take place at different times.

For a month, study participants put their receipts in a special envelope with the Central Statistical Office logo. If a participant throws away the receipt after shopping, he or she must write down the amount of the expense and information about the goods or services purchased. At the end of the data collection period, the interviewer will collect the envelope.

The survey may be carried out in other forms, e.g. through a telephone interview or by keeping a paper or online household budget book on your own.
