In April 2024, Dominique McShain, a psychology student and an HR department employee, heard the diagnosis: incurable colorectal cancer with liver metastases. Despite the dramatic situation, she decided to share her history in social media to increase awareness of this disease in young people. Over 200,000 people followed her profiles on Instagram and Tiktoku.
In her entries, Dominique McShain openly talked about what she was experiencing. “The disease changed me, but it didn’t take my love of life. There are days when I can’t get out of bed, and yet I find a reason to smile,” she wrote. She also talked about the difficult side effects of treatment: hair loss, loss of appetite, destroying pain.
In July 2024, she married her partner Sean Suson, with whom she got engaged a month after the diagnosis. “I knew that I would not have a typical life, but I wanted to feel for a moment, what it was like to be someone’s wife. I wanted to leave more than just a disease,” she said. The couple shared recordings from an intimate wedding, where Dominique was dressed in a delicate, white dress and hardly stopped tears.
Unfortunately, at the beginning of April this year, the influencer announced that her liver ceases to function and was covered by palliative care. “I don’t know how much I have left. But I know I’m not afraid of death. I’m just afraid that my loved ones will suffer when I run out. Please – remember me smiling,” she wrote in a moving post.
“My life can be short, but I really squeezed everything out of it. I experienced more love, pain and hope than some for the whole decades. And although it is all terrifying – I am grateful that I could be myself to the end” – she added in one of the last entries.
The “People” magazine confirmed on Wednesday, April 23 this year that Dominique McShain died. Her story moved thousands of people around the world, becoming a symbol of courage and determination in the face of an incurable disease.
