Tears at Roland Garros. This is the most touching moment of the tournament!
Gael Monfils said goodbye to the tennis courts. Roland Garros. The Frenchman lost to compatriot Hugo Gaston 2-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 0-6. It was a moving evening.
We informed WPROST a few days ago that Gael Monfils would be saying goodbye to Paris, on the occasion of a special event organized in honor of the Parisian. At that time, however, it was a show game.
On Monday evening (i.e. May 25), it was time for typical tournament competition. Two Frenchmen appeared at the main facility in Paris, which was practically filled to the last seat. The winner was the one who is less known, but, like Monfils, he also received the so-called wild card. But even Hugo Gaston’s success was not as important as the farewell to a player who had given the Parisian audience a lot of joy for almost two decades.
Farewell to Gael Monfils. Elina Svitolina’s tears after her husband’s words
A special moment for the gathered audience were the words that Monfils spoke into the microphone after the meeting. There were many thanks, but this particular one was addressed to the Frenchman’s wife, present in the stands. This is Elina Svitolina, a great tennis player from Ukraine who strongly supported her beloved.
– I would like to thank my wife because without her I might not be here tonight. We have been together for 8 beautiful years, you supported me, lifted my spirit, loved me and gave me the greatest gift in the form of our daughter. I love you – Monfils admitted in a moving way.
The Ukrainian tennis player was not ashamed of her tears. Interestingly, on the same day Svitolina advanced to the second round of the singles tournament. The player, who returned to professional tennis after her maternity break, is an inspiration to women around the world how well they can cope by combining motherhood and professional playing.
There is no doubt that the Frenchman’s farewell and words to his wife were a very touching moment of RG 2026.
Roland Garros 2026. Where and when to watch the tournament in Paris?
It is worth recalling that Iga Świątek won the Grand Slam event in the French capital four times. The Pole won for the first time in 2020. Then Świątek truly “introduced herself” to a wider audience.
Successes in the form of wins on the courts. The best Polish tennis player also repeated Roland Garros in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Last season, Świątek reached the semi-finals of the event, losing to Aryna Sabalenka after a three-set match. However, the Belarusian did not win the cup in Paris, because it ultimately fell to the American Coco Gauff. The US tennis player will therefore defend her championship title.
The list of Świątek’s successes in Paris also includes the Olympic medal, which the Pole won during the 2024 Games. Although the “Queen of Paris” was the main favorite for the Olympic gold medal, the Polish representative ultimately won the “consolation” in the form of a bronze medal. Looking at history, the first tennis event in the history of the Polish Olympic movement – which is certainly worth noting.
RG 2026 matches are shown on Eurosport, on a total of four channels of the station. Additionally, the online competition is available via the HBO Max platform. The competition in the main tournament is scheduled from May 24 to June 7.
