Kosiniak-Kamysz: talks with the US about a permanent base are entering the next phase

A key element of the current stage is the Pentagon’s “force review.” It is to be the basis for further political and military decisions regarding the possible permanent stationing of US forces in Poland. Such a signal means that the matter did not stop at a diplomatic declaration, but entered the level of planning and analysis on the part of the United States. This is a continuation of the activities that the Polish Ministry of Defense talked about already in June.

In mid-June, the head of the Ministry of National Defense announced that he had received a positive response from the Pentagon to the letter sent on May 29. Poland declared its readiness to host a permanent US military base on its territory.

Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized then that the American Ministry of Defense was open to the Polish offer. The latest information shows that the declarations were not empty words.

“Nearly 60% of Poles support the creation of a permanent US military base in Poland. After the positive response of the US Secretary of Defense to my proposal, we are at the next stage of talks. A review of forces is underway in the Pentagon, which will be the basis for further decisions. Increased involvement of US troops means stronger deterrence and a safer Poland.” – we read in the entry of the Deputy Prime Minister and the head of the Ministry of National Defense.

There are already about 10,000 US soldiers in Poland

Currently, there are approximately 10,000 stationed in Poland. American soldiers as part of the permanent and rotational presence. One of the most important points is Camp Kościuszko in Poznań, where the forward command of the US Army V Corps and logistics facilities for American troops operate.

However, Poland has long been striving for the majority of this presence to be permanent, with assigned units and long-term stay of soldiers.

Where could a permanent base be established in Poland? Potential location

In June, the deputy head of the Ministry of National Defense, Stanisław Wziątek, indicated that a possible permanent base would most likely be established in western Poland. He mentioned Szczecin as an attractive location, citing the possibilities of transporting heavy equipment and access to important communication corridors.

The current model of the presence of US troops in Poland is based mainly on rotational changes of subunits lasting several months. Creating a permanent base would significantly strengthen our country’s defense.
