“Sustainable development” is not only a strategy

We talk with Tomasz Taff, Chief Commercial Officer and Board Member Electrum about the future of technology, i.e.
You are a company that has implemented dozens of renewable energy projects both in Poland and abroad, mainly in Central and Eastern Europe. I have the impression that there are a lot of similar companies in this market, which is why Electrum is distinguished?
First of all, there is 28 years of experience in the implementation of energy projects-from photovoltaic and wind farms, through installations dedicated to industrial facilities, to advanced hybrid installations. At this time, we have implemented over 400 projects, we are responsible for building almost 20% full power installed in large -scale energy facilities in Poland, today we also manage facilities with a total power close to 3 GW power. This shows the scale of our commitment and trust that the partners give us.
And if you were to explain in a nutshell what Electrum does, what is the main area of your action and who do you employ?
We start with feasibility and technical design studies. Specialists in spatial planning, engineers, analysts and designers are needed here. At the same time, we conduct administrative processes. In the implementation phase, we manage the entire construction process – from logistics, through technical supervision, to quality control. Here are the key managers, construction engineers, OHS specialists and logistics. After completing the construction, we carry out tests, launch installations and integrate them with the energy system. This is a task, among others for automation, SCADA systems specialists. After commissioning of the installation, we provide its long -term maintenance, monitoring and optimization of work. Service technicians, data analysts, system operators and cybersecurity experts operate in this area. We create our own IT tools for energy management, monitoring and prediction. It is a space for programmers or people dealing with data analysis using modern tools.
Thanks to such a wide range of activities, in Electrum you can find a place for both technical and those who want to develop in administrative, analytical or creative areas.
I have the impression that the industry of the future you create, there are no major recruitment problems today.
It is true that the renewable energy industry attracts many people – both those who want to work in a sector with a real impact on the environment and society as well as those who value advanced technological issues. But that doesn’t mean recruitment is easy. Along with the dynamic development of the market, the growing degree of complexity of projects and technologies, the demand for qualified specialists and leaders, which is still lacking, increases.
So what is the biggest challenge for you?
First of all, acquiring technical experts with experience in working with energy infrastructure – such as dispatchers, engineers of wind and solar farms, or specialists for energy systems and renewable energy sources. Analysts and managers who are able to combine technical and business knowledge are also wanted.
When it comes to salaries – those who combine engineering competences and management skills with complex projects with soft competences are best paid. Specialists in automation, software and cyber security are also highly valued – especially in the context of modern energy magazines and intelligent networks.
Can work with you be an opportunity to gain experience in international projects?
Definitely. We give a real chance to participate in both research and development projects. We are active in Europe, including In Denmark or Lithuania, where we participate in the green transformation of one of the key industrial installations of the region – the only refinery in the Baltic countries, located in Mujejki.
At the same time, our experts take part in research and development projects such as Diego, Aeros, Mesh4U and Flexbit, cooperating with partners from all over Europe. In these initiatives we answer, among others for designing and implementing solutions in the field of energy management, energy storage or cyber security.
Your team consists of outstanding engineers, specialists and scientists from leading research centers in Europe. Can people who report to you count on real work with innovation, with R&D projects?
Electrum has been investing in research and development for years. We work with leading universities and research institutes in Europe, including with Hochschule Magdeburg-Sendal, Warsaw University of Technology, Salzburg Research and Ben-Gurion University of the Nedev.
Our teams participate in international research and development projects in which we are responsible for the design, testing and implementation of innovative solutions in real industrial environments.
Importantly, we not only study and develop new technologies, but also implement them in practice.
What benefits can you count on?
At Electrum, we offer benefits that support the daily functioning of our employees and respond to their real needs. We provide, among others Co -financing of private medical care or sports activities, flexible working hours and the possibility of remote work – where possible.
We place great emphasis on development – both individual and team. Employees have access to training, development programs and support in gaining new competences.
What technologies do you think are the future of the renewable energy market? Why do you focus mainly on hybrid renewable energy power plants?
The renewable energy market is constantly developing, but talking about energy transformation, we must not forget about the challenges we face today – primarily about the restrictions of network infrastructure and low flexibility of energy production from renewable sources. That is why we focus on hybrid energy facilities.
Hybrid RES power plants are integrated systems that combine various energy sources – e.g. sun, wind with energy warehouses – and allow them to be intelligent management. Thanks to this, it is possible not only to increase the stability of the generation, but also better use of available resources and infrastructure. This is a solution that responds to the real needs of not only industry, but the entire power system.
An example of this approach is our participation in the construction of the hybrid energy complex in Kleczew, which combines various renewable energy technologies in one integrated system.
We look at such technologies as green hydrogen for industry or other energy carriers. We participate in pioneering implementation of new technologies for important fuel sector players. Thanks to technologies such as intelligent meters, energy management systems (EMS) or IoT platforms, users – they will be able to manage their own production and energy consumption more effectively.
The boom for energy warehouses is coming. And today it is one of the most important areas you deal with.
That’s how it is. Energy warehouses are today one of the key elements of energy transformation and an area where Electrum intensively develops its competences. We see huge potential in the integration of magazines with renewable energy sources, as well as in their role in stabilizing the network and increasing the flexibility of the power system.
In this area, we are primarily looking for experts in the field of automation, software and energy management. The competences for the design of control systems, the integration of storage technology and creating software for monitoring and optimizing the operation of the installation are crucial for us.
You come from Podlasie. You are not a company from the capital. Does it matter in your business?
Today, in a world combined technology, less and less is where you are – and more and more how you act. You can be a company from Bialystok and have a real impact on energy transformation in Europe. You can act locally and at the same time think globally. For us it is not a contradiction – it is strength. Because our credibility and the ability to act on a large scale are taken from local relationships, trust and community. And we really believe that the company’s development should go hand in hand with the development of the environment in which it operates. That is why we are involved in projects that have a real impact on people’s lives – from education, through culture, to social assistance.
What does it give us as a company? First of all, deep rooting. Thanks to this, we are not only an employer or contractor of projects, but also a partner who understands the local context and can act with respect to the place where he functions. This builds trust – both among employees and clients.
What really hides behind the words you address to employees, telling them that you offer: “sustainable development implemented at many levels”?
For us, “sustainable development” is not only a business strategy, but a way of thinking about the company, people and the world in which we operate. We implement it at many levels – from projects that minimize environmental impact, through a responsible approach to relations with local communities.
