Surprise regarding Iga Świątek in the Polish national team. A change has just happened

However, Iga Świątek and Hubert Hurkacz will fight in mixed doubles during the Poland-Norway match in the United Cup. We got to know the official lineups.
Several dozen hours ago, we informed about a possible correction to the initial assumptions related to the mix of the Polish national team during the United Cup. Initial premise? Iga Świątek and Hubert Hurkacz. After some time, however, the version with Jan Zieliński in a duo with the second-ranked WTA ranking was increasingly considered.
Iga Świątek and Hubert Hurkacz in mixed doubles. Jan Zieliński substitute
Ultimately, it was decided to choose a variant that had already been played on courts, among others. on the occasion of last year’s United Cup. Świątek and Hurkacz will therefore form a mixed team in Australia.
In 2024 alone, Zieliński won two Grand Slam mixed doubles tournaments, the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Additionally, he also reached the semi-finals in a duo with Hsieh Su-wei on the courts. Roland Garros. Therefore, if there were to be a mixed substitution, replacing Zieliński for Hurkacz would certainly not be to the detriment of the sports value of the Polish national team.
It is worth recalling that in the case of the history of the United Cup, Polish tennis is doing quite well. Two finals have been played so far, and one of them – last year’s (2023/24) – featured the Polish national team. Ultimately, Świątek and Hurkacz lost to the German team, represented by Angelika Kerber (lost to Świątek), Alex Zwieriew (won to Hurkacz) and doubles Laura Siegemund / Alexander Zwieriew (defeated by Świątek/Hurkacz duo). In the premiere edition, the USA crushed Italy 4-0 in the final.
