In recent days, there has been a significant increase in the prices of domestic and imported strawberries. This is due to the deterioration of the weather.
Calendar summer is just over a week away, meanwhile early autumn has arrived outside the windows. The rain is undoubtedly necessary, but it takes its toll on farmers who grow crops outdoors. This includes, among others: strawberry growers.
Rain adversely affects the quality of harvested fruit. There is a threat of gray mold, which is one of the most destructive strawberry diseases, caused by the fungus Botrytis cinerea. As the website wiescirolnicze.pl reminds, it mainly attacks fruit, developing characteristic, soft rot spots covered with a fluffy, gray coating. The development of the pathogen is favored by high humidity and heat, which are currently present in the country.

Strawberry growers who appeared on the largest fruit and vegetable market in Bronisze near Warsaw have raised their rates. As the website notes, in recent days there has been a significant increase in the price of domestic and imported strawberries. On Thursday, fruit from domestic plantations cost PLN 9.00 – 20.00 per kilogram, while two days earlier it was PLN 5.00 – 8.00 per kilogram. – The main reason for this state of affairs is unfavorable, cold and rainy weather – explains Maciej Kmera from the market square in Bronisze, quoted by the portal.
The prices of fruit imported from abroad also increased. – Importers from Greece ended sales caused by the growing supply of domestic equivalents, and the price of strawberries increased to PLN 12/kg – says Kmera.
As the website farmer.pl notes, the supply of domestic cherries is also increasing. In addition to the popular Burlat variety, Cassandra is also now available for sale. Prices vary greatly and depend primarily on the size of the fruit. The cheapest batches can be purchased for about PLN 10 per kilogram, while the largest and best-colored fruits can cost up to PLN 25 per kilogram. However, fruit growers are afraid of the further course of the weather. Heavy rainfall may cause cracking of ripening fruit, which may negatively affect both the quality of the crop and the volume of the harvest. There is also a large supply of imported cherries, mainly from Greece and Serbia. Their prices currently range from PLN 12 to PLN 22 per kilogram.
