Starlink loses his contract, teslaws to Tesla. Canada hits Muska’s business

Kanada uderza w biznes Elona Muska

Canada responds to the new duties of the USA, aiming at Elon Musk’s business. The trade war is gaining strength.

In the face of new duties imposed by the administration of Donald Trump, Canada is preparing a number of retaliation that can significantly hit companies associated with Elon Musk. These decisions are a response to 25 % duties on Canadian goods and 10 % duties on Canadian energy, introduced by the USA on February 1, 2025.

Ontario breaks the contract with Starlinek

The Prime Minister of Ontario, Doug Ford, announced on Thursday morning that the province would break a contract worth 100 million Canadian dollars with Starlink, belonging to Elon Musk. The contract, signed in November 2024, was to provide access to fast satellite internet for 15,000 households and companies in distant areas of Ontario until June 2025.

“Ontario will not do business with people who are determined to destroy our economy. Canada has not started this fight with the US, but you can be sure that we are ready to win it,” said Ford during a press conference.

A 100% duties on Tesle

Christ Freeland, a candidate for the leader of the Liberal Canadian Party, proposed to apply 100% duties on Tesla cars imported from the USA. Freeland argues that Canada should use “very targeted, very precise” retaliation.

“We must do what is necessary to protect Canadian workplaces and the Canadian economy. If Trump wants to hit Canada, we will answer, aiming at his allies,” she said.

Wider retaliation

The Canadian government has already introduced 25% of customs duties on the import of USA worth $ 155 billion in Canadian dollars. The first phase, covering goods worth $ 30 billion, entered into force on Tuesday, February 4. Other duties are to be introduced after a 21-day period of public consultations.

The role of Elon Musk

Elon Musk, who currently plays a key role in Trump’s administration as the head of the so -called “Department of Government Efficiency” has become a direct goal of Canadian retaliation. His close connections with the White House meant that his companies, such as Tesla and Starlink, were on the first line of the Canadian answer.

Prime Minister Ford emphasized that the government of Ontario province and its agencies spend $ 30 billion annually on public orders. The ban on the participation of American companies in these tenders means that they will lose access to a multi -billion market.

The future of Canadian internet infrastructure

It is worth noting that the decision to terminate the contract with Starlinek may have wider implications for Canadian online infrastructure. In September 2024, the Canadian government granted a loan of $ 2.14 billion to Canadian Telesat to create a competitive satellite network in low Earth’s orbit. The minister of innovation, science and industry, François-Philippe Champagne, then emphasized the importance of this project for national security: “We will not outsource our national security and we will have a network that will protect Canada and Arctic.”

The situation remains dynamic, and the final shape of Canadian retaliation may still change. One thing is certain – the trade war between the USA and Canada is entering a new, more personal level, and Elona Muska was in its center.
