South Korea has completed one of the most important stages of the program to build its own fighter. As reported by the Defense Acquisition Planning Agency DAPA, the KF-21 Boramae aircraft has received final approval for combat suitability.
The decision ends a multi-year process of testing and verification of the machine. It also means that the fighter can perform missions in conditions of armed conflict.
Over 13,000 tests of the new fighter
According to South Korean media, the KF-21 Boramae has completed over 1,600 flights. test flights. During the program, approximately 13,000 various types of tests.
Among other things, engine performance, air refueling capabilities and weapons drop procedures were checked.
The program was implemented mainly by the Korean defense industry and the company Korea Aerospace Industries.
South Korea relies on its own weapons
DAPA representatives emphasize that achieving full combat readiness of the KF-21 Boramae is proof of South Korea’s ability to independently build modern fighters.
The new machines are intended to strengthen the air force of the country, which, according to the Global Firepower 2026 ranking, is considered the fifth strongest army in the world.
The KF-21 Boramae is classified as a 4.5 generation fighter. The planes are to replace the older F-4 and F-5 designs currently used in the South Korean air force.
The first production machines will be delivered to the army later this year
The first mass-produced fighters are to be handed over to the South Korean Air Force in the second half of 2026.
Seoul plans to receive 40 KF-21 Boramae aircraft by 2028. By 2032, the fleet is to be expanded by another 80 machines.
The program is part of a broader strategy for the development of the domestic defense industry. South Korea wants not only to buy modern weapons, but also to develop its own military technologies and increase the export of defense equipment.
The KF-21 Boramae is intended to be a symbol of Seoul’s new ambitions
The new fighter is one of the most important military projects implemented by South Korea in recent years. For the authorities in Seoul, the KF-21 Boramae program is not only of military, but also technological and industrial importance.
Achieving combat readiness shows that the South Korean defense industry is increasingly competing with the largest arms manufacturers in the world.
