Shooting at a tourist attraction. Two people are dead

Mexico, attractive to tourists, attracting with beautiful weather and boasting one of the new seven wonders of the world, turned out to be extremely dangerous for a group of visitors. At one point, the attacker started shooting near the famous archaeological zone. One of the attacked people did not survive, and the perpetrator committed suicide.

The situation occurred last Monday, April 20, in the Teotihuacan archaeological zone. At one point, an armed man started shooting at tourists near the Pyramid of the Moon. A Canadian visitor did not survive the attack, and at least six people were injured – including a 6-year-old child. The rest fled in panic and chaos reigned everywhere. Including the attacker, two people died – the shooter was 27-year-old Julio Cesar Jasso from Mexico.

The tragedy was reported by Mexico’s security ministry, and President Claudia Sheinbaum ordered the federal security cabinet to investigate. Condolences were expressed to the injured and shock was not hidden.

“What happened today in Teotihuacan pains us deeply. I express my sincerest solidarity with those affected by this event and their families. We are in contact with the Canadian Embassy,” Sheinbaum wrote on the X platform.

The Pyramid of the Moon is a popular attraction

The tragedy occurred in one of the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico. Groups of visitors regularly appear at both the Pyramid of the Moon and others. Government data shows that in 2025, over 1.8 million people from abroad were recorded there. So far, trips have been considered safe and no such incidents have occurred.

The site of Teotihuacan, called the “City of the Gods”, is located near the ancient city of Mexico, the capital of the country. Tourists visit the pyramids inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which are a series of massive structures erected by three different ancient civilizations. The area was temporarily closed after the shooting.
