Shocking scenes during the Legia Warszawa match. How did this actually happen?
Legia Warszawa lost the second match in the UEFA Conference League. The Warsaw team had a big advantage in NK Celje, but their hopes were dashed within five minutes.
It is no secret that the Warsaw team is going through difficult times. Although the Legionnaires defeated Shakhtar Donetsk in the last match in the UEFA Conference League (2:1), the change of coach and the generally still difficult sports situation in the 2025/26 season do not make everyday life easier.
Examples? Only 10th place in the PKO BP Ekstraklasa table, and Legia has already been eliminated from the STS Polish Cup after a home defeat against Pogoń Szczecin (1:2). It was also the last match as Romanian Edward Iordanescu’s coach.
UEFA Conference League: Legia Warszawa lost to NK Celje
Inaki Astiz is the temporary coach of the Warsaw team. As the first coach of Legia, the Spaniard scored a point in the league classic against Widzew in Łódź (1:1). On Thursday evening, coach Astiz made his debut in European cups. Although it seemed that Legia would remember the trip to Slovenia well.
It started with a good opening and a goal by Kacper Urbański. A great talent of Polish football, participant of, among others, Euro 2024, which is trying to get back on track after the poor end of the adventure on the Apennine Peninsula.
However, the biggest sin of the Warsaw team was that they did not close the match, confirming their large advantage with a goal for 2-0. Legia had a few chances, but the hiccup was due to problems with an effective striker. The Warsaw team simply doesn’t have one like that – at least when Jean Pierre-Nsame is injured.
And as is the case with football, missed opportunities can actually backfire. The Slovenians struck two blows in just five minutes, after which Legia never recovered. The Warsaw team had their chances, but it ended in the same way, which could be seen even before the 1-1 and 1-2 goals from the visitors’ perspective.
Interestingly, NK Celje added another three points, having had all points in the league stage. This is impressive, although certainly inconclusive in the context of the subsequent fight for a good place in the cup. However, Legia must start scoring regularly as soon as possible. Defeats against NK Celje and in the opening round against Turkish Samsunspor (0:1) certainly weigh a lot and it can be seen in the Conference League table.
It is worth recalling that last season the Warsaw team reached the quarterfinals of this competition. Legia turned out to be weaker only in the two-legged match against the later… winner of the UEFA Conference League, Chelsea. Although, interestingly, the Warsaw team was able to win honorably from London after a poor start and defeat in Warsaw.
