Belarusian nuns supporting Alexander Lukashenko and the war in Ukraine appeared at the fair in Szczecin. After the case became public, the pro-Russian order was removed.

On Friday, November 29, the Christmas Market began in Szczecin. Channel “Menskram!” on Telegram, uniting the pro-democracy movement of Belarusians in the country and abroad, noticed that one of the stalls was occupied by Belarusian Orthodox nuns. Women’s Monastery of St. Elizabeth in Minsk, which is subject to the Russian Orthodox Church, is known for supporting the regime of Alexander Lukashenko and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The case was publicized by Belarusians from Szczecin, who informed all buyers that making a purchase here supports torture in Belarusian prisons or Russian aggression in Ukraine. “Menskram!” he pointed out that this is not the first time that Orthodox “Elizabethan nuns” collect money at fairs in Europe. As we read, “obtaining a visa for an ordinary Belarusian is long and difficult, and you can get refused without any explanation.”

The portal Szczeciner.pl asked Żegluga Szczecińska Tourism Events, which organizes the fair, to comment. – Each entity that declares its willingness to participate in the Christmas Jar is verified in terms of the legality of running its business. We had no prior knowledge that the named entity might support pro-Russian activities, commented spokeswoman Celina Wołosz.

A decision was made to terminate the contract as soon as possible and prevent further sales at the Fair. Radio Szczecin added that the nuns selling devotional items were given a deadline by Tuesday at 12. Originally, the lease of the booth was supposed to last until December 8. The place of the pro-Russian order will be taken by another entrepreneur. Nuns will also not be considered for further activities in the future. Councilor Wojciech Dorżynkiewicz announced a letter to the mayor of the city.
