Severe penalties are coming for the Polish Football Association. National team fans did it again!

Kibice reprezentacji Polski

Poland won against Malta 3-2 in the last group match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. There were Polish fans in attendance, who dominated the events.

They literally dominated, because looking at the pictures from the stands of the stadium in Malta, one could wonder who was actually the guest and who was the host that day. It is no secret that away matches of the Polish national team enjoy unflagging interest.

Races at the Malta-Poland match. Will UEFA react severely?

In recent days, there has been a lot of talk about the fans of the national team. Reason? Events from Warsaw, during the Poland-Netherlands match. Some scandalous events took place, namely flares were thrown onto the pitch during the match.

Additionally, in the background there were clashes and misunderstandings between fans and the Polish Football Association and the uniformed services. It was supposed to be different, with organized cheering during the national team match, but it turned out… as usual, with mutual grievances in which everyone is right. Effect? It is possible that there will be a severe punishment from international federations towards the Polish Football Association.

We wrote about whether, for example, UEFA can close PGE Narodowy in a separate text.

However, Race appeared again in Monday’s match in Malta. In the guest sector, which again affects the Polish federation. And this may not help in the context of the later consequences of assessing the November events in Poland.

– Please remember that the owner of the television signal is FIFA and UEFA. Even if the flares themselves appeared in the stands, it would probably only result in a severe financial penalty. But interrupting the match and throwing flares on the pitch is a very serious offense. He poses a threat to football players. It doesn’t matter that it happened the first time. It all depends on how the FIFA delegate described the situation. Another issue is how the Polish Football Association will defend itself. However, this system is cruel. I think the punishment will be quite severe, admitted Marcin Samsel, a security expert, to Channel Sportowy after the Poland-Netherlands match.

It therefore seems that, in the end, the reaction from international football authorities towards Poland may be really severe. And in such cases, any translations are usually useless. Especially if incidents involving the use of pyrotechnics strictly prohibited in stadiums by UEFA occur within just a few days.

Successful play-offs for Polish players. Jan Urban’s team does not lose

In recent years, Polish football players have become specialists in winning tickets to large tournaments, competing through the so-called a second, play-off chance. This was the case, among others, in the case of the previous World Cup in Qatar (2022), where the Poles found themselves thanks to winning the match against Sweden.

After excluding the Russians from the competition, who were the Polish team’s opponents, due to their brutal attack on Ukraine, Poland played in the final against the Swedes. In Chorzów, after goals by Robert Lewandowski and Piotr Zieliński, the team won a relatively certain 2-0. It was also a great success for the then coach Czesław Michniewicz. The Pole was brought in in an emergency after a stormy breakup between the Polish Football Association and the Portuguese Paulo Sousa.

Two years later, a similar story happened to the team led by Michał Probierz. This time it was about Euro 2024. However, the Poles had to overcome two obstacles. It started with a high victory at the PGE Narodowy against Estonia (5:1) in the semi-final. In the play-off final, Poland defeated Wales in Cardiff after a series of penalties (0-0 in regular time and overtime). The hero of the match was goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny, who saved the decisive penalty in favor of the Poles.

What will it be like the third time around – relatively soon? One thing is certain. Coach Urban’s team had a good series. In the second half of 2025, since the team has been led by a former distinguished representative, most recently working for Górnik Zabrze, Poland has not lost a match.

In September, there was a draw with the Netherlands in Rotterdam (1:1) and a victory against Finland (3:1) in Chorzów. In October, a win in a friendly match against New Zealand (1-0), a participant of the 2026 World Cup – again at the Superauto.pl Silesian Stadium – and a qualifying victory against Lithuania (2-0) in Kaunas. And the recent history, a draw at the PGE Narodowy with the Dutch (1:1) and a tiring away victory against Malta (3:2).
