Last weekend there was a series of tragic accidents in the Alps. A total of seven people died on both sides of the French-Italian border.
Three climbers died on Gran Paradiso, two on Mont Maudit, one on the Matterhorn, and one was found in the Brenva area – this is the tragic summary of accidents on June 12 and 13 in the north-western Alps. Italian and French reports about the “worst weekend in 2026” in the Mont Blanc massif and remind that staying at high altitudes, also in the summer season, is associated with high risk. June is considered a transitional period and conditions can be unpredictable.
Death of climbers in the Alps. 7 accidents in 24 hours
On Friday, June 12, three climbers from Trentino died on the north face of Gran Paradiso. The rescuers who reached their bodies a few hours later and performed a preliminary reconstruction of the events, confirmed that in this case it was most likely a slipping of one of the expedition members, who dragged the other two with him. On Saturday morning, there was another fatal accident, this time at Mont Maudit, on the French side of the Mont Blanc massif, where two people died. “The causes of the incident are still being investigated by the French authorities,” we read. On the same day, a climber died on his way to the Grande Becca peak and the body of a tourist was discovered in the area of the Brenva glacier.
June is a dangerous month in the Alps
Seven deaths in a day is one of the most tragic black series in the Alps in recent years. Some may be surprised that the string of accidents took place in June and not during the peak winter season. But now more tourists and climbers are taking to the trails. Even if they are perfectly prepared for the prevailing conditions, the transition period in the highest mountains in Europe may surprise them.
In the past, accidents occurred many times in the Mont Blanc massif during this period. Two years ago, a tourist from Poland also died here.
