At the beginning of 2020, a wrestler was beaten in the Old Market Square in Poznań. The man died in hospital. The personal trainer suspected of causing the death faced life imprisonment. However, a different verdict was reached in the case.

The suspect, who had previously won the Polish kettlebell lifting championship, argued with a young wrestler whom he hit in the face. He fell on the pavement on his back and hit his head. According to Onet, as a result of skull injuries and hemorrhage, he died a few days later in a medical facility.

The coach left the country. After more than three years, however, he reported to the police in Elche (Alicante province), Spain. He heard the charges. On Monday, the man was sentenced.

Death of a young wrestler in Poznań. There is a sentence for the Polish champion

On December 23, the District Court in Poznań found that “it is impossible to determine” whether the personal trainer “attacked the wrestler with the thought that it could even lead to his death.” He hit him because he was provoking him. However, it is known that the man has a lot of strength and aimed a punch straight in the face – which was intentional and deliberate.

However, the impact itself was not very strong – it did not cause any facial injuries, but the injured person fell to the pavement after it. Later, he was diagnosed with brain contusions, bleeding and skull injuries. According to the Greater Poland justice system, it was an “unintentional manslaughter.” This means that the court did not fully agree with the prosecutor’s office, which accused the personal trainer of wanting or agreeing to cause the wrestler’s death.

The man was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison. This is because he had been punished in the past and was not interested in the fate of the young wrestler – writes Onet. On the fateful day, he spent some time with him in one of the clubs in Poznań, and then he left the place and left the country. The coach admitted in court that he “cowarded” and was afraid of revenge. He apologized to the deceased’s brother, who was present in the courtroom, as well as to all other people who suffered emotionally as a result of the tragedy. He explained that he now understands his mistakes and has changed. This was treated as a mitigating circumstance – the Poznań court believed in his sincerity and that he would draw conclusions.

There is a verdict. “This is not the place or time to open champagne.”

On Monday, the court agreed to let the man leave prison. Even though the verdict is not final, the justice system decided that the Polish champion can wait for the verdict to become final while in prison, but he is to visit the police station once a week. He also cannot leave the borders of the Republic of Poland.

After leaving the court building, the man admitted in a conversation with journalists that “this is not the place or time to announce success and open champagne.” – There is a human drama here. A man died and I believe that the only thing he would wish for at this moment is peace, and please respect that, he noted.
