Upamiętnienie Lucjana Brychczego

Legia Warszawa unexpectedly lost 1-2 to FC Lugano in the UEFA Conference League. On that day, however, not only the sports result of the capital club was important.

This is a difficult time for Legia Warszawa. Several days ago, the inhabitants of Warsaw lost their great figure, Lucjan Brychczy. The UEFA Conference League match with the Swiss FC Lugano was the right opportunity to say goodbye to a legendary figure of the club at the stadium at Łazienkowska in a special way.

Goncalo Feio with a special message for Małgorzata Brychczy

The minute of silence before the start of the UEFA Conference League clash was poignant. The Legia stadium, filled with fans, actually said goodbye to Brychczy in thought. A beautiful “sector line” appeared, and after silence it was time to chant the name and surname of the Legia legend. Poignant pictures.

Legia players unexpectedly lost 1:2 to their Swiss rival. That day they were a worse team, for the first time in this edition of the UEFA Conference League. After the match, however, not only the sports result was talked about.

Brychczy’s topic was taken up again by coach Goncalo Feio. The Portuguese addressed the widow, Mrs. Margaret, in a special way.

– Mrs. Małgosia Brychcza, we know that you are watching us. Today we represented Legia with dignity – with commitment and fight. It wasn’t enough today, but we can’t be denied the fight. It was not a matter of volitional qualities. The hardest thing is to be proud after a match like this, but I think we should be. We are dissatisfied with the defeat, but I appreciate and am proud of the path we have traveled. Mr. Lucjan can also be proud of us – said Legia’s coach at the post-match conference, quoted by Sport.pl.

“Kici”, as Brychczy was called on the pitch, as a Legia player in the years 1954–1972, he played 452 matches, scoring 226 goals. He won the title of Polish champion four times (1955, 1956, 1969, 1970) and won the Polish Cup four times (1955, 1956, 1964, 1966). He was the top scorer in the Polish league three times. In the Polish national team (he was, among others, the captain of the national team) he played 58 times, scoring 18 goals. It is worth adding that he played at the Olympic Games in 1960.

After retiring, he served as a coach and member of Legia’s training staff, and from 2014 he was the honorary president of the club. In recognition of his services to Polish football, he was awarded the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.

Posthumously, “Kici” was honored by the Polish Football Association with the PZPN Diamond Honorary Badge. Additionally, President Andrzej Duda awarded Brychczy the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, which was announced on the day of the funeral.

Lucjan Brychczy died on December 2 at the age of 90. He was buried at the Powązki Military Cemetery in Warsaw.
