Scammers target seniors. The police issued an urgent message
The wave of fraud is gaining strength. Due to the growing scale of the practice, the police issued a special message containing security instructions for citizens.
Every day there are hundreds of fraud attempts in Poland. The victims of criminals are most often seniors, who lose even tens of thousands of zlotys by falling for false stories invented by fraudsters. Criminal behavior is almost always based on the same scenario, but despite many warnings, many people still fall for it, and it does not only apply to the elderly. Young people, in fact of all ages, are increasingly becoming victims of criminals.
The high amounts that victims unwittingly transfer to criminals often constitute the victims’ life savings, for whom the loss of this money means, first of all, very high material losses, but also social ones – related to the loss of trust in people and self-condemnation for being deceived. Each of us is exposed to this.
Police announcement. Safety manual for citizens
Due to the scale of the crime, the police decided to issue a statement explaining to citizens what they should watch out for. This can save you from falling into the trap of criminals.
The police reminds and warns to be “sensitive” to situations in which someone asks us to send or return money. It is important to sensitize your household members to the methods of fraudsters and indicate what should be done to avoid becoming their victims.
Wave of fraud in Poland. Vigilance is key
The officers pay attention to always be vigilant, cautious or even distrustful in contacts with strangers who call our telephone number and ask about our personal or financial matters. Police officers never make such calls or collect any money in person.
If we come across such a conversation and its course seems suspicious, we should inform the services as soon as possible. It is equally important for safety to be careful in contacts with people visiting our houses or apartments.
The police point out that being prudent and vigilant can protect us from becoming victims of fraudsters. If a person knocking on our door pretending to be an administrator, courier or plumber, we should actually verify whether such visits were intended. Just call the company, security or building administration, where you will quickly receive information on planned inspections or repairs.
When a stranger’s visit takes place, it is also worth remembering what such people looked like, what they were wearing, how they introduced themselves, whether they arrived by car or whether someone accompanied them.
– This information will allow us to identify and stop fraudsters faster. It is also worth asking for help from people closest to you – neighbors or family. Their presence will make us feel more confident and safe, and in the event of a possible danger we will not be alone – explains the police.
Police: let’s educate and warn others
Our own attitude and educating others about safety in such situations play a key role in prevention. It is worth talking to warn family members, especially the elderly, and make them aware of the potential risks and the risk of losing their life savings caused by the lack of any scruples of fraudsters and scammers.
The police appeal to always, even in the case of the slightest suspicion of an attempt to commit fraud by people visiting our places of residence or calling us (especially from unknown numbers, which is a plague today), inform the services about the situation and our assumptions. Thanks to the quick response, the officers will be able to help immediately.
