Russians immobilized on the Vistula Spit. Action by Ukrainian intelligence

Aleksandr Obuchow

The Ukrainian Military Intelligence Service (HUR) has disabled the Russian minesweeper “Aleksandr Obukhov”, belonging to the Baltic Fleet. The ship was stationed in Baltiysk (Kaliningrad Oblast) on the Vistula Spit.

HUR damaged the ship while preparing for combat service. According to information provided by Ukrainian intelligence on the Telegram platform, water entered the unit’s engine as a result of damage to the gas channel, which resulted in the failure of the M-503 engine. This type of engine is currently a rare and difficult to obtain component, which significantly complicates the process of repairing the minesweeper.

“As a result of a successful Ukrainian defense intelligence operation, the minesweeper of the Baltic Fleet of the Russian Federation Aleksandr Obukhov was immobilized. The ship, which was stationed in the city of Baltiysk and was about to enter combat service, suffered serious damage – water entered the engine due to a mysterious hole in the gas channel: Obukhov choked,” the HUR statement reads.

After the attack, the minesweeper was sent for general repairs to St. Petersburg, where specialists are trying to repair the damage. The repair operation is expensive and time-consuming due to the complex structure of the unit. “Aleksandr Obukhov” is one of the modern mine-countermeasure ships designed to neutralize sea mines, which makes it a key element of Russian defense in the Baltic Sea region, reports the “Naval News” website.

This is the second time a Baltic Fleet ship has been disabled in the last six months, which shows the effectiveness of Ukrainian military intelligence in weakening Russia’s operational capabilities in the region. According to experts, damage to the Obukhov may have long-term consequences, as each subsequent neutralization of a vessel of this class reduces the ability of the Russian fleet to conduct mine countermeasures operations.

Foreign media, such as “Naval News”, emphasize that Ukraine’s cooperation with NATO, including participation in the “Sea Breeze” exercises, allows Ukrainian crews to improve their skills and adapt to the alliance’s standards.
