Russians Fire on Civilian Ship. Zelensky: Attack Outside Ukraine

Volodymyr Zelensky reported via the X platform that a ship carrying grain from Ukraine to Egypt was hit by a Russian missile. The incident allegedly occurred on the night of Wednesday to Thursday.

The Ukrainian president also published photos of the destruction that occurred after the missile landed on the vessel. According to Zelensky, it was the Russians who carried out the attack on an ordinary civilian ship. The incident allegedly took place in – and this is the most outrageous thing about it – the Black Sea, after the ship had already “left Ukrainian territorial waters.”

“We are waiting for the world’s reaction”

Zelensky said – citing preliminary findings – that no one was killed. The ship was carrying wheat that was to be transported south to northeastern Africa.

“Ukraine is one of the key global guarantors of food security. Internal stability and normal life in dozens of countries around the world depend on the normal and uninterrupted functioning of our food expert corridor,” the Ukrainian leader emphasized. He also recalled that the transportation of grain to African and Middle Eastern countries “is of crucial importance.” “We will continue to make every effort to protect our ports, the Black Sea and food exports to world markets. This is Ukraine’s real priority – the protection of life – and it should be the priority of all countries,” Zelensky noted in a post on the X platform.

“We are waiting for the world to react. Wheat and food security should never be a target for missiles,” he said.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister: A brazen attack on freedom of navigation

The new AU Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha also spoke out on the matter. “This Russian strike is a brazen attack on freedom of navigation and global food security, in violation of the resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly,” he said.

He noted that Ukraine will take steps in this matter. “We will immediately notify the UN and the International Maritime Organization about this crime,” he announced. He also called on partners “to react decisively.”
