Russia returns to the Olympic Games! A shocking decision by the IOC

Władimir Putin

The IOC is temporarily lifting the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee, it was announced in a press release on Tuesday (July 7). This is the official position.

Thus, the recommendations to the International Olympic Federations regarding the participation of Russian athletes are no longer valid.

“The Executive Committee (SC) of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has temporarily lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee (RKO), which has been in force since October 12, 2023. The decision was taken after a thorough analysis conducted by the IOC Legal Commission,” we read in a special statement.

Thus, the gate for Russia and Belarus to the Summer Games in Los Angeles (2028) has officially been opened. And this despite the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Unfortunately, several moves made in the previous months could suggest that the Olympic movement would be opening up to Russia – even despite such an inconceivable situation – with respect to the peaceful values that should guide this part of sport.

The IOC opened the way for Russia. The return of Russian athletes is one step away!

What does Tuesday’s (i.e. July 7) decision mean in practice? By lifting the recommendation not to allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to take part in the competition, the International Olympic Committee left a free hand to individual federations and associations. They will continue to decide whether the above-mentioned countries will take part in the international competition.

However, the road to the Olympics has been opened, so it is not difficult to imagine a situation in which there will actually be violations of the previously applicable rules, with respect to the suspension of Russia and Belarus.

The IOC has no intention of organizing sporting events in Russia. Additionally, it was noted that the most important body of the Olympic movement will not invite representatives of state authorities and representatives of the Russian government to its events.

Additionally, in the full statement available on the IOC website, it was admitted that the organization fully sympathizes with the Olympic Community of Ukraine.
