Robert Lewandowski regained his joy. Captain one step away from the historic barrier!

Robert Lewandowski

The victory over Lithuania in Kaunas was sealed for Poland by Robert Lewandowski. The national team captain added his 87th goal for the national team.

There is no doubt that Robert Lewandowski is a footballer who is slowly entering the final stretch of his career. The breakup of “Lewy” from the Polish national team will probably happen much sooner. For now, the 37-year-old striker is happy with his performances, and he has just added goal number 87 in national colors.

Robert Lewandowski is getting closer to the “hundred”. Will the captain reach his anniversary?

Thanks to the win against Lithuania in Kaunas (2-0), the Poles are getting closer to extending their hopes of advancing to the 2026 World Cup. Poland will most likely play in the play-offs for next year’s World Cup. It cannot be ruled out that this may be one of Lewandowski’s last opportunities to put on the national jersey in an official match.

Will “Lewy” manage to exceed the barrier of 100 goals in the Polish national team? Currently, he is missing 13 goals, which is certainly a long distance considering the small number of matches to be played, assuming the fight for the World Cup or the subsequent World Cup with the participation of Poles. However, if Lewandowski actually intended to exceed or reach the hundred mark, it would be an achievement that would probably set the bar for other Polish footballers at a sky-high level.

RL9 scored 87 goals and added 36 assists in 161 matches for the Polish national team. In total, Lewandowski exceeded the barrier of 700 goals in his career. And the counter is still ticking and it seems that both FC Barcelona and the national team will still get a lot of consolation from “Left”.

Rescue from Jan Urban? PZPN with direction after the Michał Probierz era

It is worth recalling that coach Michał Probierz started the qualifying rounds for next year’s World Championships as a coach. The Polish coach remained in his position after last year’s European Championships, where the team failed to advance from the group. The Poles recorded only one point, although in a clash with the world vice-champions, the French (1:1).

Ultimately, however, as the following months showed, they highlighted the Poles’ mediocre play and on-pitch conflicts. For example, the most famous coach with Robert Lewandowski, deprived of the captain’s armband and… resigning from playing in the national team as long as Probierz is the coach. Additionally, the Poles lost a very important away game against Finland (1:2), complicating their situation in the World Cup qualifying group.

After the unsuccessful international break in June, the Polish Football Association left Probierz in his position, but the coach, under increasing pressure, decided to resign. He was succeeded by Jan Urban. The former Polish representative, most recently the coach of Górnik Zabrze, had a very successful start to his career, in September drawing on a difficult terrain in Rotterdam with the Netherlands (1:1), and then winning against Finland (3:1) in Chorzów. The atmosphere around the team cleared up significantly, and the aforementioned Lewandowski returned to the team, regaining the captain’s armband.

Urban added two more victories during the October international break. A win in the friendly match against New Zealand (1-0) and, much more importantly, three points taken from Kaunas for the match against Lithuania (2-0).
