Lewandowski was appointed by Beenhakker in September 2008. He made his debut on 10.09.2008 in an away meeting with San Marino. Lewandowski needed only eight minutes to enter the list of shooters. “Lewy” determined the result of the meeting at 2: 0.

Such art had not previously succeeded in any other selector, headed by the great medalists of the World Cup – Kazimierz Górski and Antoni Piechniczek. Beenhakker was the first to introduce Poland to the European Championships.
The coach of the Polish national team Beenhakker was in 2006-09. During the euro 2008, the Polish team lost to Germany, drew to Austria and came down from the field again – at the end of the group playing with Croatia.
The Dutchman announced his retirement on June 2, 2015.
Leo Beenhakker died at the age of 82.
