Revolution on the state highway. The gates are being closed down

The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways is preparing to eliminate further toll collection points. This time, the changes will cover the state-owned section of the A2 motorway in Greater Poland. The announced tender concerns both the development of design documentation and the demolition of the infrastructure that has been used to collect fees from drivers for years.

The investment will be financed by the Ministry of Finance. It is another step away from the traditional system of gates on state-managed highways. After the works are completed, drivers will use the route without the former toll collection points, and driving through the rebuilt places will be possible without having to slow down before the closed infrastructure.

Three toll gates on the A2 motorway will be demolished

The proceedings cover toll collection points located in Żdżary, Koło and Dąbie. However, the contractor’s task will not only be to dismantle roofs, stands and other elements of the toll collection system.

It will also be necessary to restore the road to full motorway parameters. Parts of the road have been adapted to serve gates for years, so they require reconstruction and the introduction of new traffic organization. Only after completing this work will the route be able to function without the infrastructure that has lost its original purpose.

The opening of offers in the tender is scheduled for May 25. After selecting the contractor and signing the contract, design work and procedures related to obtaining the required consents will begin.

First the design, then the demolition of the infrastructure

The GDDKiA schedule assumes that the preparation of complete documentation will take approximately five months. Only after completing this stage will it be possible to start the actual construction works.

The demolition of the gates, reconstruction of parts of the road and adaptation of the route to new traffic rules are expected to take approximately seven months. The entire project will be completed after several months from the moment of concluding the contract with the contractor.

The removal of gates on A2 is part of a larger program. GDDKiA is conducting similar proceedings on the A4 motorway. The procedures apply to sections running through the Opole and Silesian voivodeships.

The former toll collection points lost their importance after the abolition of tolls for passenger cars and motorcycles on state-owned sections of highways. Their removal is intended to improve traffic flow and travel comfort.
