An exotic trip to Thailand is a fulfillment of many people’s dreams. For many of us, this country is becoming more and more accessible, and its popularity is growing, among others thanks to television entertainment programs or series in which the action takes place on Thai islands. Now some travelers must be careful of restrictions. Local authorities provided urgent information.
Restrictions for tourists in Thailand
Thailand closed all border crossings with Cambodia for most travelers. A special statement was issued on Monday, June 23. It is known that the case concerns seven provinces, including all existing transitions to Cambodia. Even Poles will feel changes if they are in this area. The traffic is closed regardless of whether we move on foot, by car or other vehicles. Opening hours of control points were also shortened.
The exception are students who go through the border to school, situations in which it is necessary to provide medical assistance or transport necessary goods. Thailand authorities, as well as the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, recommend exercising increased caution in the region of the border. The ministry explains that the border of both countries remains partly unregulated, which is why it has been on clashes for years.
It’s about safety
The Prime Minister of Thailand Paetongtarn Shinawatra, explains the introduction of control, the desire to stop people from visiting “lucrative casinos” in Cambodia. Despite this, all tourists, including foreign ones, are affected by the restrictions.
The army, in turn, ensures that it is about security related to the political conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, which has recently been intended. BBC draws attention to this problem, mentioning that the relations of both countries have been the worst in 10 years. Recently, this has been largely influenced by, among others border fighting, which took place at the end of May. A Cambodian soldier died in one of them. For this reason, Cambodia banned, among others import of fruit, vegetables or electronics from Thailand.
Another reason for disputes is, among others The ancient temple of Śiwy, Preah Vihear, to which both countries claim their rights.
