The best railway station in Poland was chosen. This unique station defeated as many as six other candidates.
More than a month after the start of voting for the best station in Poland in 2024, the time has come to announce the results. During the 14th Railway Congress taking place in Warsaw, the Pro Kolej Foundation presented the winner of the competition. It was the railway station in Zakopane, which was recently under renovation. On the way to victory, the Małopolska facility had to defeat six other finalists: Dąbrowa Górnicza, Goleniów, Konin, Siedlce, Wadowice and Włocławek.
Zakopane is the best train station in Poland
This was definitely the year of regional stations. The finalists of the seventh edition of the Railway Station of the Year competition included mainly smaller and medium-sized cities. For example, the list did not include the station in Gdańsk, which won a special audience award last year, or Wrocław, which won in 2021 in the same category. However, this year’s winner cannot be denied his popularity. The best station of 2024 was the main station in Zakopane. Despite major problems that the newly renovated station encountered in March this year (a sinkhole was created on one of the platforms), the Zakopane station won the hearts of the jury.
“The revitalization of the station in Zakopane combined history with modernity,” says Dr. Bartosz Mazur, one of the participants of the railway congress. The interior of the neoclassical building has the features of a well-known and popular mountain resort in the 1980s and meets the needs of today’s passengers. There are also wooden highland elements. By lowering the tracks by one meter, the station is easily accessible to seniors and people with special needs – they do not have to use steps to enter or exit the train. “The station in Zakopane combines everything that is important from the city’s point of view, as well as from the traveler’s point of view,” we read.
Dąbrowa Górnicza with distinction
Although jury members spoke favorably about each of the nominated stations, there could only be one winner. However, Internet users had their own special vote, thanks to which a special audience award was granted. Dąbrowa Górnicza was unrivaled in this category, with its station building dating from 1888 opened in October 2023 after two years of renovation. The second place in the Internet users’ vote went to the station in Włocławek, and the third place to the station in Konin.
